Quality Books eP-CIP File Conversion Instructions

P-CIP text files must be submitted using ASCII DOS Text (*.txt), MS-DOS Text (*.txt), Text Only (*.txt), or Plain Text (*.txt) format (preferably with "line breaks"). Files in other formats, including Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Rich Text Format (RTF), Adobe PDF, JPEG, GIF, etc., are unacceptable. Applications with attached text containing such proprietary coding or other non-ASCII files cannot be processed and will be rejected.

The examples below may assist you in converting your files to a plain text format.

Microsoft Word

MS Word 97/2000:

With the document open in Microsoft Word 97/2000, select "File" and "Save As...".
In the "Save As..." window, click on the "Save as type:" drop-down list.
Select one of the following choices: "MS-DOS Text with Line Breaks (*.txt)" or "Text Only with Line Breaks (*.txt)" from the list of file types -- not "Word Document (*.doc)".

MS Word 2002/XP:

With the document open in Microsoft Word 2002/XP, select "File" and "Save As..."
In the "Save As..." window, click on the "Save As type:" drop-down list.
Select the following choice: "Plain Text" -- not "Word Document (*.doc)".
When you select "Save" with the "Plain Text" file-type option selected, another window is presented. In that window, these are the options that should be selected: "Text Encoding," "Other Encoding," and "US-ASCII." Check the box labeled "Insert line breaks". Check the box that allows "character substitution."

Adobe PDF:

Versions of Adobe Reader after version 6.0 have an option to save as text. The full version of Adobe Acrobat should have a similar function to save as plain text. Adobe's website also has pages discussing how to convert a PDF file to plain text. WordPerfect

With the document open in WordPerfect, select "File" and "Save As..."
In the "Save As..." window, click on the "File type:" drop-down list.
Select the following choice: "ASCII DOS Text (*.txt)" from the list of file types -- not "WordPerfect 6/7/8/9/10/11 (*.wpd)".

ClarisWorks/AppleWorks (on Macintosh):

With the document open in ClarisWorks or AppleWorks, select "File" and "Save as..."
"Save As..." window, click on the drop-down list "File Format" or "Save As:"
Select "Text" (or "Text DOS" or "Text Win").
Name the file as you wish, ending with a '.txt' extension (limit file names to 31 total characters or less).
Navigate to the location you want to save the file and click Save.

Using MacLinkPlus (based on MacLinkPlus Deluxe, v. 11.0):

Open the MacLinkPlus application.
Drop the file(s) you want to convert into the Drag Files Here box, or click the Add Files... button and navigate to the files you want to convert.
Click translate (making sure the file is highlighted in the Selected Files/Drag Files Here box).
Select DOS text document (or DOS text document with line breaks) in the Translator Preferences for Word Processing.
Take note of the Destination Folder and click the Set button to change the location.
If the New File Name looks ok, click Translate to convert the file(s).

Alternatively, if you have the Document Converter drag-and-drop application that comes with MacLinkPlus, use that, set to "DOS document with MacLinkPlus translation" or to "Text Windows document with MacLinkPlus translation."

Other formats

Other word processing applications should have options similar to those listed above for creating a plain text file, using a "Save as" or "Export" command, usually found in the File menu of the application. Otherwise, please type at least the title page, exactly as it will appear, into a text editor (or word processor) and save the file as plain text. Notepad (Windows), WordPad (Windows), SimpleText (MacOS Classic), and TextEdit (MacOS X) are examples of text editors found on many machines.
